The Center for Art and Advocacy’s space is intentionally designed as an interdisciplinary hub that fosters community through film screenings, performances, readings and exhibitions. Its design reflects the ways in which people engage with creativity—through intimate reading spaces, collective gatherings and personal experiences with art—mirroring The Center’s broader mission of connection through artistic exchange. The Center is uniquely dedicated to presenting writing, film and visual art on equal footing, creating a space where these disciplines intersect seamlessly, making it a rare and vital cultural space in New York.

"In Lorton's Darkroom" Screening & Talkback

April 17, 2026

Join us at the Center on Friday, April 17 from 6 – 8pm for a screening of the documentary In Lorton's Darkroom. The screening will be followed by a talkback with the filmmakers Karen Ruckman and Emma Pearce, film subject Bernard Seaborn, and Center Fellow Beverly Price.

Set in Washington, DC, at the dawn of mass incarceration, In Lorton’s Darkroom explores the intersection of fine arts photography and the criminal justice system inside Lorton Prison, where cameras were banned, arts programming was contested, and brutality was an unspoken rule. As overcrowding intensifies, a group of incarcerated men are given access to a classroom and a darkroom that transforms their lives. Shot over 30 years, the film follows their creative journeys from inside prison walls to the fragile promise of stability on the outside. Both personal and profound, it is a story of art as resistance, rehabilitation, and radical human connection.
